Sydney artist, Brendan Maclean has just released an album called White Canvas which you can find on iTunes, or via his myspace site.
He's also a pretty talented, and witty guy. You can catch him making jokes on Twitter, or posting videos to Youtube on any given day of the week, but for now, read what he had to say about what makes him tick...
• What are your biggest influences?
I’m a sucker for a good film – maybe it’s cheating but I find myself writing songs inspired by movies I watch.
Just last week I saw “Let The Right One In” - I found myself writing these sparse, dramatic, poetic songs.
Pity about the tunes after seeing Eclipse...
But everyday influences a song, a fight, an awkward moment. It’s all in there.
• How would you describe your music?
Artistically I get the piano playing songwriters.
Rufus Wainwright, Whitlams and with my band a dash of Panic at The Disco.
I’m happiest when I’m in Fiona Apple territory.
A strong piano line alongside personal lyricism, but lately I’ve been adding a little zest.
I end up sounding like a moody Ben Folds who just ate too much sherbet.
• What's your background? How did you get started in your music career?
For me it started at the end of school.
I was a singer from my musical theatre days, but I found that the style wasn’t sitting right for me, and certainly the songs weren’t helping me express the ideas in my head.
It all came together when my school teacher was throwing out a Casio keyboard.
I just started teaching myself from there.
• Are there any specific themes or ideas behind your songs?
White Canvas was a pretty literal self-examination.
The things I regret, the mistakes I made while trying to find direction.
I put all those thoughts together and said “Well let’s just start again.”
• Where can we find your album/music?
You can find my record White Canvas on iTunes or hit me up on twitter (@macleanbrendan) and I’ll totally send you one with a sock... or something.
